12bf4aa3d31b9e9ea454461a65c2656330c8d72d breaks work with reopened volumes (AFAIU)

Reopened volumes seems to have some previously allocated positions as available; haven't checked yet, but AFAIR 12bf4aa3d31b9e9ea454461a65c2656330c8d72d caused this problem
Currently this commit is reversed, but it might make sense to review it
